Myanmar - Khar Taw Hmi
Myanmar - Khar Taw Hmi
Myanmar, previously known as Burma, has a particularly storied recent history; only declaring their independence as a nation in 1948 - with speciality coffee only starting to be grown in the years from 2011, after political reforms drove for a better agricultural program, eradicating opium growth. Our friends Christian and Shirani from Indochina Coffee have helped drive education in this sector, with their first shipment of coffee being the first to come from Myanmar to the UK in 2017. They have helped farmers to sell for higher prices and produce incredible quality. We are delighted to support this during our second year by purchasing from Khar Taw Hmi.
U Sai Wan is the lead farmer of the Khar Taw Hmi farm, on the Green Land estate, bordering the Shan State at the edge of the Mandalay Division. As the lead farmer here, he has won multiple awards over the years in Myanmar's speciality coffee competitions for his arabica. Most of the coffee grown here is actually 'Costa Rica' a hybrid of Catimor - however, we've opted for the SL34 varietal he grows (which only forms around 10% of his yield).
This lot of SL34 is naturally processed; producing what he think is a complex, sweet espresso style brew - with the potential to be a relatively funky filter. Dominant flavours of grapefruit with undertones of sweetness.
